Peace Out, Wisdom Tooth #2!

WELP I just got my upper-right wisdom tooth removed this morning, and I feel like a NEW WOMAN.

Actually, the first dose of pain meds are just starting to wear off, so I'll likely be feeling like a sore, cranky woman very shortly. Either way, getting this sucker out is one more thing I can take off of my mind/plate for now, so thank god for that.

This was much less dramatic than my last wisdom tooth extraction, which involved lots of tooth-breaking and gymnastics on the part of the oral surgeon. This time, the tooth was able to be pulled out all in one bloody piece:

I'm one of those people who requires entirely too much local anesthetic before feeling properly numbed, and this time was no different. At first, it felt fine with the initial dosage, but when the doctor started really pulling the tooth out, I could definitely feel some uncomfortable, slightly-painful pressure. We stopped, and she gave me more anesthetic while explaining to me that she was twisting out my tooth "like a lightbulb." Hmm. Interesting visual, doc. Thanks! With just a couple minutes of twisting and without much more fanfare, the tooth came out. Done and done.

And yep, I took this one home with me, too. Why should the tooth fairy have all the tooth-collecting fun? Speaking of which, my mom told me to put the tooth under my pillow tonight... Note to self: #DONTFORGET.

I do encourage you to check out the "after" photo of Wisdom Tooth #1 - it didn't fare nearly as well as this one did. But in its defense, it was in a much trickier place in my mouth.

Anyway, after picking up all of my appropriate prescriptions, I made my way back home and have kind of just been chilling and eating cold and/or mushy things all afternoon and evening. To avoid nausea, it will be important to keep eating food steadily while I'm taking these meds... so cue the smoothies, ice cream, yogurt, and scrambled eggs. I'm sure it's what Beyoncé's diet looks like, too.

Currently I'm just slightly chipmunk-cheeked on my right side, but it may get worse in the next day or two. I'm not allowed to exercise - or SNEEZE - for a couple of days either, so... wish me luckkkk.

Sidebar, I was really, really pleased with my entire experience at this dental office - Great Hill Dental in Boston. The surgeon I saw, Dr. Carol Lorente, was unbelievably kind, patient, and warm. The woman assisting the procedure, Kim, was the same. I felt like I was in very good hands with them, and that peace of mind goes a long way with someone like me who is very anxious about the dentist.

Who else has some misbehaving wisdom teeth? If you have a funny story about yours, I'd love to hear it!

Falling into Fall while Holding a Camera

Normally I post my workouts today, but that damn shoulder pain has prevented me from even going to the gym this week. In lieu of a Workouts of the Week blog today, I thought I'd post some pictures I took while walking around the Mystic River Reservation on the first day of fall:

A tree with no leaves

A field and a forest

Tree with cool textured bark
.  i love the deep grooves in this tree's bark  .
Tree roots popping through the sidewalk
.  this tree's roots were rebelling against the sidewalk  .
Weird looking purple berries

.  pop of yellow in this green tree  .
Some of this tree's leaves are turning yellow

Airplane against a blue sky
.  airplanes fly over my apartment building alllllll the time  .

Despite the shoulder pain, this weekend has been a nice one. I finally got some muscle relaxers that give me enough relief to fall asleep, and since I didn't sleep at all last week, my Friday night was spent curled up in my bed watching episodes of Scandal on Netflix before passing out around 10. It was very exciting for me to realize when I woke up on Saturday that I'd actually fallen asleep the night before. Yesterday I spent the afternoon in Cambridge with my friends Kara and Jenna. We went to lunch at Charlie's Kitchen, where we ate outside in their beer garden, and then did some casual shopping in Harvard Square. Later that night I decided to tackle the project of putting together my new Tarva bed from Ikea. I expected to only take the parts out of the box and evaluate the situation, but I ended up glancing at the directions and realizing that they didn't look too tricky. And, lo, they weren't! I put the entire bed together, topped it with my comfy mattress, and slept on a REAL bed for the first time since moving in. Hoozah!

This afternoon some of my girlfriends are getting together for what we hope will be a new monthly staple:  a craft club! We'll take turns hosting the club and the craft (so each hostess will choose the craft on her day), and we will eat food and drink wine while being creative. Jenna is hosting the inaugural Craft Club (is it OK if I capitalize it? It's pretty official) today, and has kept the craft a secret so far. Can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve! I'll definitely bring my camera and then hopefully blog about it afterwards.

What do you think of the idea of a Craft Club? Sound like something you'd ever do with your friends?
Who else watches Scandal?
Is fall showing itself in your neighborhood trees yet?

The Tone It Up girls launched their 2014 Bikini Series a couple weeks ago, and with that comes all-new workouts from those sexxxxxay ladies! I'm particularly loving some of the new exercises featured in their updated Bikini Booty workout, which you should check out here, if you're tryna work on DAT ASS DOE this season. I know I am.

I had a dinner out with my friend Rose on Friday night in Vancouver's Gastown neighborhood. We tried out a new-to-us restaurant called 131 Water Kitchen & Bar, where I enjoyed my cherry-infused vodka drink but wasn't in love with my salmon salad. But we were there early enough to order some half-priced appetizers from their happy hour menu, and our tortilla chips and yam fries were both quite yummy. It was a great night to sit out on the patio and do some people-watching. 131 Water was certainly a nice place to get some post-work drinks on a Friday night, but you can probably do better in terms of good food in Gastown.

Yesterday was a day of multi-tasking, while getting all of the tasks done. It was awesome. My afternoon was spent doing laundry, washing a sink full of dishes, cleaning/reorganizing an overflowing-with-crap closet, buying and re-potting a new plant for our balcony, and disposing of a dying palm tree that had literally just been rotting inside its pot.

By the end of the afternoon, all of my chores were done, my apartment was clean, my balcony was swept and spotless, and I'd even managed to get to the gym for a lower body workout. I rewarded myself with a relaxing bath using one of the Lush bath bombs that I purchased back in November from their holiday collection...

Lush Luxury Pud bath bomb in use
.  this is the end of the bath - it was a magical navy/purple swirly splendor earlier  .

And the rewards didn't stop there because after a dinner of spaghetti squash, steamed kale, and apple slices, I walked to Scoop and got myself some raspberry frozen yogurt with plenty of sweet toppings! There would be a picture of this masterpiece but... I devoured it too fast.

Dandelions, beach, and ships in Vancouver's English Bay
.  this is a random picture of english bay in vancouver  .
.  i didn't think you'd mind  .
Other highlights from the weekend so far:
  • Big slow rain drops on my head as I walked through downtown Vancouver after dinner on Friday night. Charming at first, and then a good reason to hail a cab.
  • Finished watching The Rescuers Down Under (I started it probably 2 months ago and never finished it).
  • Rented 12 Years A Slave from RedBox. Cried several times while watching it.
  • Chocolate croissant with my breakfast Saturday morning from Viva Fine Foods & Bakery.
  • Finding a couple of shirts in my closet that I can get rid of/donate to Salvay.
  • Swapped out my winter-ish shoes and boots and replaced them in my closet with my warmer weather shoes and sandals.
  • Tiramisu donut from Lucky's Doughnuts... mmm.
  • Picking out an outfit for the wedding I'll be attending in Massachusetts in June! My outfit is nearly narrowed down, but the questions of footwear and accessories have yet to be addressed. Such a fun "problem" to try to resolve though, wouldn't you say? By the way, so far I'm completely shopping my own closet for that shit.

So basically, WHO EVEN KNOWS what today holds for me?! What else is left to do?!

Oh, snap, that's right. It's Mother's Day. Gotta call Momma! You should, too.

Workouts of the Week... and Waffles

Hellllllo and Happy March to you!

This weekend has been a combination of indulgent and productive so far. I finally got my taxes in order, so that's one responsible thing to cross off my list. This will be my first tax season where I've got to deal with the "contractor" income that I made in the past year, so it remains to be seen exactly how much I will owe the US government. Hopefully it's nothing too shocking that I am unprepared for.

I assume you came here to read about my taxes, right? Oh... you didn't? Mmk, well then how about you check out this Instagram picture of a delicious Belgian waffle that I enjoyed on Friday night:

Waffles with fruit and berries and whipped cream from Nero Belgian Waffle Bar in Vancouver
.  mmmmm  .

My friend Rose and I met up for a cappuccino and some waffles at Nero Belgian Waffle Bar on Robson St. in Vancouver. It was a really nice way to unwind after the work week! I ordered their "Heaven" waffle, which was a crispy Belgian waffle served with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Rose had a fruity waffle covered in kiwi, banana, mixed berries, orange slices, and whipped cream. Nero has a really delicious selection of toppings - even some savory ones! I can't wait to bring Dave there sometime - I think he'll enjoy it.

But don't worry guys, I did go to the gym before the waffle bar (all of my workouts are listed below!), plus had a decently healthy few days worth of eating leading up to that as well. So Friday pre-dinner dessert waffles were most certainly in order. #SawryImNotSawry. #EatinAllTheWaffles.

My Saturday started a bit later than usual - I didn't wake up till about 9:40! Usually I'm awake by 8:30 on the weekends. So I got up, snapped some photos for a few different blogs, mailed out my tax stuff, bought two new Maybelline Color Show nail polishes from Shoppers Drug Mart (this one and this one), scoped out Urban Outfitters (nearly buying these boots), bought a delicious Cookies 'n Cream donut from Lucky's Doughnuts on 4th Ave (which I later shared with David over teatime), and went to the gym. Told you it's been a mix of indulgent and productive!

No idea what today has in store. We were thinking of going somewhere for a hike, but it's not supposed to be that nice outside, so that may deter us. It's been awhile since I've gone hiking, but sometimes it's not as fun when the weather is too crappy for any nice views. So it may be a more low-key day! We'll see.

Here are all of my workouts from the past week:

2/24 (cardio)
20 mins rowing machine
5 mins stair stepper

2/26 (lower body and core)
5 mins elliptical
15 squats holding 25 lbs
30 Russian get ups, holding 5 lbs
40 calf raises, 12.5 lbs each hand
15 deadlifts, 12.5 lbs each hand
30 cobras

2/28 (upper body and core)
2 mins jumping jacks
12 chest press on exercise ball, 12.5 lbs each hand
20 weighted crunches on exercise ball, holding 12.5 lbs
12 close grip chest press on exercise ball, 12.5 lbs each hand
20 Russian get ups, holding 5 lbs
12 Arnold press, 10 lbs each hand
12 bent over rows each arm, holding 12.5 lbs
12 deltoid flys, 7.5 lbs each hand
40 alternating weighted side bends, 12.5 lbs each hand
12 deltoid raises, 7.5 lbs each hand
30 cobras
15 squats, holding 25 lbs
12 lat pulldowns, 30 lbs
12 lat pulldowns, 40 lbs
12 lat pulldowns, 50 lbs

3/1 (lower body and core)
3 mins jumping jacks
15 squats, 25 lbs
20 Russian get ups, holding 5 lbs
40 calf raises, 15 lbs each hand
40 side lunges + plyometric push off (each side)
20 weighted v-sit twists, holding 15 lbs
60 bridges
1:00 plank
15 deadlifts, 15 lbs each hand
30 cobras
12 lat pulldowns, 30 lbs
12 lat pulldowns, 40 lbs
12 lat pulldowns, 50 lbs
5 mins rowing machine

I've enjoyed adding the rowing machine into my gym routine lately. Sometimes the very idea of getting onto the elliptical gives me the Debs. I tried out the stair stepper this week too - and good god is that thing difficult. I sweat more in the 5 minutes spent on the stepper than I did in the 20 minutes spent on the row machine! So that will be something I'll have to ease into. I don't know how some people spend a half hour on the stair stepper. They must be punishing themselves for something.

Random sidebar - if you're going to do a few minutes of jumping jacks, do it while listening to Kanye West's Black Skinhead. It's literally the perfect tempo for jumping jacks... it actually had me smiling while I was jumping.

What have you been up to this weekend?

Are you watching the Oscars tonight?

Have you ever been to a waffle bar before??

The Freakin' Weekend + Workouts of the Week

Not to brag or anything, but I've kinda been kicking this weekend's ass. I had a to-do list a mile long and have been crossing things off of it like whoa. Dave was away from Friday morning until Saturday evening, and I was so busy that I PRACTICALLY DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE HE WAS GONE. Sawry, Dave.

My weekend kicked off with a Friday evening workout at a practically empty gym (whoohoo!), where I learned a new skill after recruiting a gym employee to show me a thing or two about the row machine. On the way home from the gym, I fit in a quick but surprisingly successful trip to the 4th Ave Salvation Army, where I found an awesome pair of AE corduroy pants, a cute sweater top, and a graphic t-shirt.

The rest of my Friday night consisted of leftover pizza for dinner (that part wasn't that exciting), an ice cream sundae from a new ice cream place on 4th Ave that I've been meaning to check out, and watching Justin Timberlake on the Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show. I fell asleep that night while watching The Rescuers Down Under on Netflix in bed.

My Saturday began bright and early - and with the pleasant realization that it was snowing lightly outside. It hasn't snowed much in Vancouver the whole time I've been living here, so it's always sort of a treat. I honestly don't miss the snowy, cold winters of Massachusetts, but it is nice to have some snow falling every once in awhile.

I won't bore you with all the details, but my successful Saturday of to-doing included:
  • depositing a check at the bank first thing in the morning (the teller commended me for "coming out in this snow," so I told her that I'm from Massachusetts and that "this isn't snow.")
  • putting money onto my laundry card
  • enjoying a solo breakfast at Abigail's Party
  • stopping at the market for bananas and milk
  • doing 4 loads of laundry
  • an exciting afternoon activity of making a breakfasty quinoa with bananas, vanilla extract, cinnamon, brown sugar, and milk. It was exciting because I somehow managed to let the quinoa boil over 3 freaking times. (Sidebar: this quinoa recipe was pretty good, but I have big plans for making it taste way better the next time I make it! Then I'll share the recipe!)
  • scrubbing my entire bathroom, top to bottom
  • cleaning a ton of dishes
  • renting and watching Runner Runner
  • getting my tax stuff ready to send to my accountant (who is also my uncle)
  • eating a dinner with David of delicious chicken tacos from LOCAL (I raved about these in my 2013 Favorites blog)
On top of all of that, I also managed to take and edit a ton of pictures AND EVEN WRITE THIS BLOG THAT YOU'RE READING RIGHT NOW.

Today I've got a few more odds and ends on the to-do list but most of the big things were crossed off yesterday. I love making a to-do list every weekend - it helps me feel super productive! Do you make to-do lists too?

I got in 4 decent workouts this past week, and there may even be another exercise sesh in my day today. We'll see how the day progresses! Here's what I did at the gym last week:

2/17 (lower body)
5 mins elliptical
15 squats, holding 25 lbs
1:00 plank
1:00 plank
60 weighted calf raises, 12.5 lbs each hand
1:00 plank
60 bridges
20 deadlifts, 12.5 lbs each hand
1:00 plank
40 side lunges + plyometric pushoff (each side)
1:30 plank

2/19 (upper body)
2x:
12 chest press on exercise ball, 12.5 lbs each hand
12 bent over rows each arm, holding 12.5 lbs
12 close grip chest press on exercise ball, 12.5 lbs each hand
12 Arnold press, 10 lbs each hand
12 deltoid flys, 5 lbs each hand (+ 10 more mini flys with left arm)
12 deltoid raises, 5 lbs each hand (+ 10 more mini raises with left arm)
 15 squats, holding 25 lbs

2/21 (lower body and core)
10 mins rowing machine
2x:
   15 squats holding 25 lbs
30 Russian get ups, holding 5 lbs
40 calf raises, 15 lbs each hand
15 deadlifts, 15 lbs each hand
20 lying overhead raise + double crunch, holding 5 lbs
   30 cobras
60 bridges

2/22 (upper body and core)
5 mins elliptical
12 chest press on exercise ball, 12.5 lbs each hand
30 weighted v-sit twists w/ 12.5 lbs
12 bent over rows each arm, holding 12.5 lbs
30 weighted crunches on exercise ball, holding 12.5 lbs
12 close grip chest press on exercise ball, 12.5 lbs each hand
30 Russian get ups, holding 8 lbs
12 Arnold press, 10 lbs each hand
1:00 plank
12 deltoid flys, 7.5 lbs each hand
12 deltoid raises, 7.5 lbs each hand
30 cobras
15 squats, holding 25 lbs

If I do go to the gym today it will most likely just be for cardio. I'm going to try to mix-up my cardio a little more to keep things interesting. The row machine came into the mix on Friday, and I think the Stair Master is calling my name next.

Speaking of throwing things into the mix (not a great segue, but shut up), I love enjoying a glass of chocolate milk after the gym as part of my post-workout routine. I have heard that chocolate milk is a great recovery drink because of the combination of carbs and protein. Admittedly, I didn't do much research on this because when someone tells me I ought to have chocolate as part of my workout recovery, I will take their word for it, #AMIRIGHTLADIES?!

Post workout recovery chocolate milk

What do you do to get in your post-workout protein? Do you drink protein shakes? Have a favorite protein bar? Let me know!

I hope you're having a good weekend! Have you been checking things off of your list?

Peace Out, Wisdom Tooth #1!

For the last......... oooh 7-ish years I'd say, I've had one single wisdom tooth erupting from my gums on the lower left side of my mouth.

When I was younger, my 12-year molars were removed because my teeth were very crowded and they all (read: the adults) thought this would be a great way to prevent my eventual wisdom teeth from effing up my mouth. Boy were they wrong.

Well, they were right for awhile actually. It wasn't until around 2005 or 2006 (when I was 21 or 22-ish) that any of my wisdom teeth began actually erupting through my gums. But instead of growing in like a normal tooth, sliding seamlessly into the space that my 12-year molar had so generously left for it, this one decided to grow in ON CRACK. Here's a brief diagram of what I mean:

wisdom tooth grew in sideways

You can imagine that having a tooth grow in at such an unfortunate angle posed some problems. Those problems are as follows:

1. Food constantly got wedged in that awkward area between my wisdom tooth and the molar beside it:
chicken stuck in teeth

bread stuck in teeth

2. It was impossible to keep its surface clean because a tooth brush couldn't adequately maneuver its way into that peculiar wedge:

can't brush tooth

toothbrush can't reach tooth

toothbrush can't reach tooth surface
.  mreh  .
3. It was eventually going to damage the perfectly reasonable and well-behaved molar beside it, if left unchecked:

wisdom tooth damage other teeth

When we moved to Vancouver we acquired dental insurance - the first time I'd had it since 2006.  In January, when our insurance plans finally kicked in, I took my fine ass to the dentist. She was... unimpressed with the fact that I hadn't gotten the blatantly troublesome wisdom tooth removed yet. She even went so far as to remind me that I wasn't getting any younger and that the healing process for getting a tooth removed would only become more difficult as I aged. With that information, a date was finally set for me to get the G.D. thing taken out.

This past Friday WAS that date.

For those of you who have been 'neath a rock for the last week and a half or so, last week was an insane week for anyone who either lived in or gave a crap about someone who lived in Boston. Or if you are an American in general, last week was a fucking crazy week. The bombings in Boston, the subsequent uncertainty and chaos, the shooting at MIT, the shootouts and car chases, the lockdown of an entire city and its suburbs... throw in the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas and a few other miscellaneous pieces of bad news... and last week can seriously go screw itself.

With ALL of that going on ALL week long - one thing after another - I was glued to the news stations and websites and live news feeds for entire days at a time. However, feeling so incredibly anxious and displaced and worried about the bad things that were happening everywhere in the U.S. had the unintended side effect of making me forget to be anxious about my impending tooth removal! I didn't have room in my brain to be nervous about it at all.

If you know me well, you might know that I get anxious going to the dentist because my teeth are very sensitive so it's very painful for them to be touched by someone. It's even more painful for them to be scraped and poked by metal instruments or blasted with cold air and water. The fact that there was no unease or tension going into my oral surgery is, for me, beyond unheard of.

Even as I sat in the chair in the surgery room, waiting for the doctor to come and maul my poor gums, I wasn't nervous. Something about the chaos in Boston had numbed me into thinking that something as simple and small and undramatic as a tooth removal had no business being made into a big deal. Make a fuss about getting a tooth pulled out? How could I possibly, after the week that other people had just been through?

I didn't mean for this blog to take a debbie turn, but that was something that stood out to me while I was getting an inch-long Novocaine needle rammed into my gums repeatedly:  This isn't pain or discomfort. Pain is what the people who were just maimed by bomb shrapnel are feeling right now.

Dramatic? Maybe. But it worked to keep me calm at the time.

Alright, now back to the fun stuff. Novocaine! That stuff is supposed to be awesome, right?? Supposed to make your shit feel like... nothing at all! Well #oops, someone forgot to tell MY body that 28 years ago because no matter what the occasion I will consistently - like, crazy consistently - require 4-to-5 times the amount of Novocaine that anyone else seems to need. Know what that means? That means that the doctor will always always always begin working on me and I can still feel it. #Ouch.

This time was no exception - they needed to stop about 5 times throughout the procedure to re-shoot me with more Novocaine.

Another reason I don't like the dentist:  I have a pretty small mouth, as it turns out (hence the crowded teeth situation). The normal tools that a dentist will use to prop a patient's mouth open are too big for me, resulting in a "holy crap I swear to God my jaw is about to break" sensation. I made them take that prop out within about 3 minutes because I truly was worried that they might accidentally break my jaw. I'm not kidding. At one point during the surgery, the surgeon told me five times in a row to open my mouth - it was already open as far as it would go - and then asked me if I could HEAR her. I literally pointed to my mouth and shrugged. That was my nonverbal way of communicating to her, "Bitch, I can't unhinge my jaw for you. This is as wide as it goes. #WorkWithIt."

Remember that problem that I described earlier, about how the odd angle of the wisdom tooth made it hard for a toothbrush to finagle its way into that crevice? Turns out that that same odd angle made it equally as trying to get a "tooth-yanker-outer" in there to remove the tooth easily. The result? The surgeon needed to crack my poor tooth into several pieces and then dig each piece out one by one. I'm just glad I didn't have to watch this part, though I did get to hear it... plus feel the pressure of the doctor using all of the muscles in her entire tiny body to rip the pieces of my tooth out of my jaw. I hope she took herself outside for a cigarette afterwards.

At the end of the bloody battle - you know the point at which the dentist usually says something awesome to you like, "You've been such a good girl. Here is a lollypop, a coupon for unlimited ice cream, and a bunch of pain killers" - my oral surgeon looked at me and said... "So you have Motrin at home, right?"

FML. You mean the same medicine that handles my menstrual cramps? You want that to suffice here, now that you've literally dug a hole into my gums and sewn it back up with what can only be described as dental floss and a fish hook? Swell.

No, literally... my face is swelling up.

Before leaving the office I requested that they let me keep my tooth, now in four distinct pieces. I didn't think it was a strange request, but they were very clearly taken aback for an instant before the dental assistant slid the bloody bits into a tiny ziplock bag for me. I tried to explain my logic, which went as follows: "That stupid tooth has been causing me so much grief for so long [please see points 1-3 from earlier in this blog] that I deserve to look it in its face." But the entire left side of my face was completely numb from being shot up with about a gallon of Novocaine, so it probably came out more like, "Blehhhhh. Drool."

Anyway, here's the little SOB now - what, you thought I wasn't going to include a pic of my tooth here in this blog? Come on.

picture of extracted wisdom tooth
.  and yes, of course i've tried to put it back together  .
.  like all great puzzles, it's missing some pieces  .

What an adventure, huh!? Well it's not over yet; I am definitely still recovering. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday my diet was strictly beverages, ice cream, luke-warm soup, and a steady flow of Tylenol/Motrin/amoxicillin. I started chewing things on Monday and have been struggling to chew things ONLY on the right side of my mouth ever since. It's a real - how you say? - bitch. It makes eating slower and actually tasting my food a lot trickier. I've also been swishing pretty often with salty water and icing my face with an ice pack. The ice isn't doing anything for the swelling at this point (I still look like I have a serious jowl situation going on, on the left side of my mouth), but it helps to ease the soreness each time my medicine wears off.

And the medicine seems to wear off constantlyyyyyy. In the interim between the time that the meds wear off and the next dose kicks in, I turn into a whiny little bitch. Like.... actually whimpering out loud. It sucks, but statistics imply that I'll probably make it through this alive. Especially since I'm taking my antibiotics every 8 hours like a good girl.

So in conclusion.... one wisdom tooth down, three to go!

Fahhhhk.

A Productive Saturday Followed by a Thus-Far Unproductive Sunday

Yesterday was filled with doing things. I even made a to-do list! Huzzah!

The day started well with a phone call to my sister Mallory, who turned 29 yesterday. I followed that up with a call to my UMass friends, who were all tailgating and partying it up together on the East Coast at a UMass football game at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. They passed the phone around and I got to hear the voices of several of my favorite people. There was lots of yelling, plenty of garbled conversation, many "wait, what???'s", and lots of UMASSSSSSSSSS! Love those guys fo' life.

Next I got pretty real with myself and decided it was seriously time to do something about the mountain of dirty dishes piling up in the dish bucket. The kitchen looked effing awesome by the time I was done with it, which filled me with the inspiration to actually cook something that night.

At this point it wasn't raining yet, so I took advantage of the sorta-sunshine and set off on foot to do some errands as well as continue my Saturday morning ritual of getting breakfast out at a restaurant.

I was going to (gasp!) repeat a restaurant and go back to Cafe Zen, but was deterred by the long line. I then noticed that there was another restaurant right next door, Abigail's Party, that was also serving breakfast and had no line. I scooted over there and was able to be seated at the end of a longer table immediately! Holla! That is one of the perks of going out to breakfast alone (Dave is still geo-manning in the Arctic) - it's not hard for restaurants to find room for one person. My seat even had a perfect view of the two cooks who were very professionally preparing the food and crafting the dishes behind the open serving station. I may despise cooking myself, but for some reason I love watching other people cook and put dishes together. It gave me something particularly interesting to occupy myself with while I was waiting for my meal, as normally I'd just people-watch and scope out the design of the restaurant space. I'm a very seasoned solo diner-outer.

My Brunch Clubhouse Sandwich was spectacular:  avocado, fried egg, bacon, local greens, multi-grain bread, aged cheddar, aioli. Really incredible. The smell of it as I took my first bite reminded me of Esselon Cafe in Hadley, where Dave and I met in 2007. #WhatUpHadley. My sandwich was also served with some of the best homefries I've ever had. They had the most delicately crispy exterior and were seasoned with dill (an herb that always makes me think of my Grandmother and her amazing coleslaw recipe, which is heavy on the dill). They basically just melted in my mouth. It's making me hungry just thinking about it! I'm definitely going to go back to this restaurant, and I can't wait for Dave to try it as well.

After breakfast, I headed up the hill to 4th Ave to find the post office.

[Sidebar, I was wearing a brand new, extremely freaking cozy, minty-colored sweater that I just picked up on Friday night from the Forever21 that's a breezy 45 minutes away. I was slightly devastated when I learned that Vancouver does not have a Forever21 store at all. (#SickJokes.) I was slightly less devastated to see that they're actually in the process of opening one Downtown :)  But truthfully my glee upon seeing the Forever21-in-progress was diminished by how much more work it appeared needed to be done before it would be ready to open. Fortunately, Google guided me to the nearest store in Burnaby, a town to Vancouver's slight southeast... but in Vancouvzie's traffic (which sucks) it was not a quick trip. After meticulously scouring the 2-floor store for about 2 hours, I ended up buying the mint 1/2 sleeve sweater and a new pair of earrings. Whoop!!]

The post office near my place is actually located inside one of Canada's many versions of a Walgreen's/CVS, Shopper's Drug Mart (who came up with that one?). I managed to not buy any new nail polish while I was there. Of note was that my two favorite face washes (this scrub and this cleanser) are sold for $10.49 each here in Canadian dollars (that's $10.54 US dollars, as of right this second. Curiously the US dollar has become slightly more valuable here in the last 72 hours), compared to the approximately $6.50 that they each cost in the States. So that sucks. #CanadianProblems

I mailed some bills (super exciting), bought my first Canadian stamps, purchased an In Style magazine to cut up for an upcoming collage project, and picked out a special card for my good friend (and loyal penpal) Stephanie.

Quick stop at a slightly inconspicuous coffee bar off of 4th Ave for a mocha before continuing on to
Urban Outfitters, where I walked around for 25 minutes holding two more of their nail polishes before deciding that I wasn't going to purchase anything else and probably shouldn't buy the nail polishes either. So I put them back and left.

After my morning of spending Canadian money, I headed back home to tackle my laundry issues, of which I had many. Like four loads worth of issues. It finally started raining while I was moving things from washer to dryer, prompting one of those popular "weather conversations" between myself and a stranger in the laundry room.

While the laundry was in the dryer I slipped in a grocery trip to make good on my promise to cook something that evening for dinner. With a 45-minute window I made it to the Safeway and back, picking up some kale, ground turkey, parmesan cheese, chicken broth, *cough* chocolate cake *cough*, sweet potatoes, and bread.

I had big plans of making a fancy grilled cheese for dinner, with kale chips and a sweet potato on the side. Successssful on all counts!

My grilled cheese consisted of:
  - cheddar cheese
  - parmesan cheese
  - sauteed onions
  - mango chutney
  - baby spinach

I'd never made kale chips before and I was only assuming that the mango chutney would taste good with my grilled cheese. That they both turned out very well was a pleasant surprise! Cue chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert. Cue also guilt for not having gone to the gym since Thursday night.

I finished out my evening by watching The Other Guys (which just recently popped up in my Netflix streaming options, to my joy and surprise) and the newest episode of South Park.

Today I didn't even get out of bed until 11:30 - that never happens! Ever!! I blame it on both my new pillow and my lack of children. And also on the dreariness of the Vancouver rainy season, because it makes our bedroom extremely dark in the mornings.

Now it's 3:34 pm and the most constructive thing I've done today is paint my nails while writing this blog and half paying attention to the Patriots game. Perhaps not coincidentally, I also just played the word "LAZY" in my ongoing game against my brother in Words with Friends.

I hope you're having a great weekend! What have you been up to?
