Radiant Orchid Nail Polish - Revlon Top Speed Orchid

Pantone named Radiant Orchid as the Color of the Year for 2014, and I was not disappointed in that choice! There are several nail polishes in my stash that fall under the "orchid" category, so I thought it would be a fun mini-series to show you some options for Radiant Orchid nail polishes.

I'm starting the series today with Revlon's Top Speed polish in the color (surprise, surprise) Orchid (#555):

Radiant Orchid Color of the Year, Revlon Orchid nail polish

Revlon's Orchid is filled with micro flecks of silver that give this polish a metallic sheen on your fingers. It was actually really hard for me to tell if the flecks were silver or gold. Ultimately I ended up settling on silver... I think.

Revlon Top Speed Orchid nail polish, aka Bailey

Orchid is very bright and pretty to look at, and those afore-mentioned flecks catch the light enough to make this a sparkly-but-not-glittery, polish:

Orchid by Revlon is a Top Speed polish with tiny silvery flecks.
It applies very nicely - doesn't streak at all.  It's also very opaque - you could definitely get away with one coat if you were in a rush, but I like to do at least two coats... to make it easier for me to peel off the polish as soon as my OCD-esque finger-fidgeting happens to call for it. What, you don't peel your polish off and arrange it into tiny piles? Weird.

This is one of Revlon's Top Speed fast dry polishes, and most "quick dry" polish formulas do tend to dry out a bit faster in the bottle. So always make sure to keep the top off the bottle for as little time as possible while applying. Replace the top and give the polish a good thorough mixing (by rolling between your palms, NOT by shaking violently!) after every couple of nails to keep the formula from becoming too thick while you're using it.

My only complaint about this polish is that it's very sensitive to texture beneath it - meaning that it accentuates any ridges or uneven prior-coat applications on your nail's surface. So there's that.

Do you own any orchid polishes?

Are you a fan of the Radiant Orchid choice for Pantone's 2014 Color of the Year?

  1. I'm not sure the Radiant Orchid trend is going to look good with my coloring, but I'll give it a shot!

    1. Aww, well the good news is that there are lots of different variations of this color, so I bet you could play around with different shades of orchid until you find a hue that you love on you! Check out some of the different shades on Pantone's site: http://www.pantone.com/pages/index.aspx?pg=21131

  2. That's a bummer that it accentuates any ridges in your nail :/ I like the Pantone Color of the Year. I'd definitely wear some Orchid on my nails in 2014 :)

    1. I've got a whole pile of orchid nail polishes sitting on my desk right now, staring me in the face. I'm DEFINITELY excited about this color :)

  3. I've had problems with other Revlon polishes being sensitive to texture too. For whatever reason the formula goes on so thin for me that it accentuates any minor problem. It's a shame because I adore the colours Revlon has. :(

    1. I wonder if it could be made better with thicker coats? I'm going to keep working around with this particular polish till I find its "sweet spot" with coat thickness - I can't give up on this pretty color! :) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. Lovely! And I only found out about the color of the years last year. I was ecstatic that it was Emerald and then over the moon about Radiant Orchid. I mean seriously, if you follow my blog enough, I rarely shut up about green/purple and the radiant orchid shades are just gorgeous! :) Can't wait to see your other ones!

    1. I was so psyched about emerald last year too because it's a flattering color on my skin tone, and I just picked up an emerald polish the other day! It'll take more than a New Year for me to stop gravitating towards that color! ;)

  5. I've always loved purple colors so loving the "orchid" color! Although I'm not sure if I can pull this color off as makeup.

Just followed you! Would appreciate if you checked out my blog and maybe follow back if you like it! Fellow vancouverite :)

  7. Eeeee!!! ORCHID!!! I've always said that if I were to be a flower (because doesn't everyone think like that? ha) I'd be an orchid so I'm ALL OVER THIS COLOUR! I'm not sure about the sheen on this one, though. I like flat colours, sparkles, and shimmer-i-ness but a frosted sheen for such a light colour makes it look a little bleached out, to me. NOT THAT IT LOOKS BAD BECAUSE YOU'RE AWESOME AND I LOVE YOU (I just wanted to make that clear, haha!). I have a few orchid shades myself, and you bet that I'll be showing them off soon! :D

  10. OMG Bailey....sometimes I peel my gel polish off and put it in piles...shhhhh don't tell anyone!! lol
I like this color on you!! I have a love/hate relationship with Revlon polish. I love how they look, but hate them on. I gave up after my bad luck with Revlon's Elusive. I just don't like to putz around with a iffy formula. Lazy I know! :) Hope you are having a great New Year! xoxo
